The Opportunity
The project aimed to enhance the overall layout of the site and improve pedestrian and vehicle flow into the local area. It also included the transformation of a section of the River Darent into a fast-flowing, naturally designed waterway with rich ecological value, flowing through two public parks and into the town centre.
The Challenges
Key challenges included removal of buried asbestos, the discovery of an operational culvert requiring road redesign, archaeological finds, and delays due to roosting bats. TPI also had to carefully phase the project to maintain public access throughout and manage the impact of COVID-19.
The Outcome
The works have fully transformed the area, improving transport links and creating a new public space. The refurbished buildings and landscaped grounds have opened opportunities for community use and commercial events, delivering lasting benefits to the town centre.
