Border Control Posts

The construction of necessary UK border control infrastructure, within existing Port environments, associated with the UK’s departure from the EU. Each project involved the construction of large industrial shed units, which are divided into a number of inspection areas with specialist unloading equipment, dock levellers and refrigeration facilities. The areas are bio-secure for plants, fruit and vegetables, sanitary areas for the handling of products of animal origin, for both human and non-human consumption and specialist areas for live animals. Each area has an inspection room for carrying out physical checks on the incoming freight, along with specialist refrigerated and frozen storage facilities, offices and welfare facilities.

The Opportunity

At 23:00 on the 31st December 2020, the Brexit transition period ended and the UK started operating under the new Border Operating Model (BOM). It became essential that Ports moving goods from the EU, comply with the BOM so that businesses can continue to trade effectively. As a consequence, infrastructure needed to be improved, in order to meet the further requirements of full border controls on EU goods.

The Challenges

The buildings were constructed within live port environments and required enhancements to existing infrastructure and new incoming services. Traffic movements around the Port needed to be maintained so as not to affect the ongoing Port operations throughout the duration of the project.

The Outcome

Works were completed to programme, budget and the required quality levels, all of which were closely monitored and reported upon by Total Project Integration.
