Redevelopment of the former ESSO site
Purfleet, Essex
The project involved the remediation and transformation of a complex brownfield site, former Esso Land, into a high-capacity cargo handling facility to support CLdN’s expanding operational needs. TPI led the project from early feasibility and procurement through to construction, completion, and handover.

The Opportunity
The project supports CLdN’s strategic growth objectives by enhancing the functionality and throughput of their London Terminal. Our remit covered coordination of enabling works, infrastructure development, construction of new substations, high voltage diversions, container crane beam extension and installation of high masts. Our role ensured smooth delivery of a technically challenging scheme while minimising disruption to adjacent live operations.
The Challenges
The site’s historical use as a petrochemical facility presented environmental risks that required careful management. A high water table and proximity to the River Thames introduced additional technical complexity during groundworks and drainage installation. Effective coordination was required between multiple contractors, designers, and stakeholders, alongside ongoing liaison with statutory authorities. Ground conditions demanded the implementation of ground improvement measures, including surcharging and pre-cast piled foundations.
The Outcome
Despite the site’s constraints and logistical challenges, Total Project Integration successfully coordinated the safe and efficient delivery of the works. The site is now fully operational, and the enhanced terminal infrastructure supports CLdN’s wider logistics capabilities.
