The Opportunity
This strategically important scheme enabled the Port of Tyne to increase berth capacity for new customers, especially for wood pellet cargos linked to energy sector transitions. The works also allowed the ageing operational quay to be demolished and reconstructed to modern standards, improving structural loading and extending its utility for bulk cargo services well into the future.
The Challenges
Delivering construction works within a live port demanded careful phasing to avoid disruption to daily operations. Tidal restrictions, variable weather, and marine licence conditions further complicated the programme. TPI worked collaboratively with the Port’s engineering team to develop the concept design and employer’s requirements, while ensuring strong coordination through an established communication strategy. TPI also supported the regulated procurement process and oversaw the on-site works.
The Outcome
The project was delivered safely on time, and on budget. TPI’s open, collaborative approach helped foster a strong team dynamic and clear stakeholder communication. The Port now benefits from enhanced operational capacity and resilience, with long-term benefits for customer services.
